How to identify SMD diodes?

1, Understand the basic knowledge of SMD diodes
Before starting to learn how to identify SMD diodes, it is necessary to first understand the basic principles and characteristics of diodes. A diode is a semiconductor device with unidirectional conductivity that allows current to flow freely in one direction while being almost non-conductive in another direction. This characteristic makes diodes widely used in circuits such as rectification, switching, and voltage regulation.
2, Observation marking and packaging

SMD diodes usually have markings printed on them, which may be letters, numbers, or combinations, used to indicate the type, polarity, packaging, and other information of the diode. For example, some diodes may have model markings such as "1N4148" or polarity markings such as "A" and "K", where "A" represents the anode (positive pole) and "K" represents the cathode (negative pole).
Understanding encapsulation types:
There are various packaging types for SMD diodes, commonly including 0603, 0805, 1206, etc. These numbers indicate the size of the diode. For example, the 0603 package represents a diode length of 0.06 inches (1.52 millimeters) and a width of 0.03 inches (0.76 millimeters). In addition, there are different packaging forms such as cylindrical and rectangular, which usually affect the installation and heat dissipation performance of diodes.
3, Identify polarity
For most SMD diodes, identifying their polarity is crucial. Polarity errors may cause circuits to malfunction and even damage diodes. Here are some methods to identify the polarity of diodes:

As mentioned above, some diodes will have clear polarity markings, such as "A" and "K".
Observation packaging:
For certain types of diodes, such as cylindrical or rectangular packages with grooves, polarity can be identified by observing the shape of the package. Usually, one end of a diode has a small notch or mark, indicating that it is the cathode (negative pole).
Use a multimeter:
If there are no obvious markings on the diode, or if you are unsure of the meaning of the markings, you can use a multimeter for testing. Set the multimeter to diode test mode, and then touch the two pins of the diode with red and black probes respectively. If the multimeter shows conductivity (reading), the red probe is in contact with the anode (positive pole) and the black probe is in contact with the cathode (negative pole). If the multimeter does not display conductivity, swap the probes and try again.
4, Check the performance of the diode
After identifying the type and polarity of the diode, it is also necessary to check whether its performance is good. This can be achieved by using a multimeter to test the forward and reverse resistance of the diode.
Positive resistance test:
Set the multimeter to resistance mode and use red and black probes to touch the anode and cathode of the diode respectively. If the diode is good, the multimeter should display a smaller resistance value (usually between a few hundred ohms and a few thousand ohms), indicating that the diode is conducting under forward bias.
Reverse resistance test:
Swap the red and black probes of the multimeter and measure the resistance of the diode again. If the diode is good, the multimeter should display a large resistance value (usually in the megaohm range), indicating that the diode is turned off under reverse bias.
5, Precautions
Preparation before operation:
Before conducting diode identification, please ensure that you have understood the relevant electronic knowledge and safety operating procedures. When using a multimeter, make sure it is set to the correct test mode and avoid testing in high voltage or high current environments.
Anti static protection:
SMD diodes are sensitive to static electricity, so it is necessary to take anti-static measures when handling them, such as wearing anti-static wristbands, using anti-static workbenches, etc.
Recognition accuracy:
Due to the small size and unclear labeling of SMD diodes, please be careful and patient when identifying them. If you are unsure about the type or polarity of a diode, please refer to the relevant data manual or consult a professional.
