Differences and Similarities between Stabilizer Tube and TVS Tube

In the application of electronic systems, transient interference of voltage and current can often cause damage to electronic equipment. The prominent feature of transient interference is its extremely short action time, but its high voltage amplitude and transient energy make it highly destructive. In order to prevent such damage, TVS tube has been widely used. TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) is an efficient circuit protection device developed on the basis of voltage stabilizing tube technology. Its Electronic symbol is the same as that of ordinary voltage stabilizing diode, and its shape is the same as that of ordinary diode. When TVS tube ends are subjected to transient high energy impact, it can suddenly reduce its impedance at a very high speed (up to 1 * 10-12 seconds), Simultaneously absorbing a large current, the voltage between its two ends is clamped at a predetermined value to ensure that subsequent circuit components are not damaged by transient high-energy impacts. We often see TVS diodes as one of the main means of ESD protection in some precision electronic devices.

 

As a common feature of both, they can be used for voltage stabilization and operate in a reverse cutoff state. Their forward characteristics are the same as ordinary diodes, and their reverse characteristics are typical PN junction avalanche devices. However, the breakdown current of TVS transistor Zener is smaller, and the voltage stabilization greater than 10V is only 1mA. Relatively speaking, the breakdown current of Zener diode is much higher, but Zener diode voltage stabilization accuracy can be achieved relatively high. Moreover, TVS transistors emphasize transient response, so their time parameters are important, which means that the response time of the voltage regulator diode is usually slower than that of TVS transistors. At the same time, the power of the TVS tube is higher, while the power of the regulator tube is lower
