What are the three methods for testing transistors?

1, Static resistance testing method
Static resistance testing is the most fundamental and common method for testing transistors. This method mainly uses a multimeter to measure the resistance value between each pin of the transistor when the circuit is not powered on, in order to preliminarily determine the performance status of the transistor.
Principles and steps
Principle: There is a certain resistance relationship between the base, emitter, and collector of a transistor, and these resistance values can be measured by a multimeter when the transistor is not working. Under normal circumstances, when a transistor is in the off state (i.e. without bias current), the resistance between the base and emitter, as well as between the base and collector, should be relatively high, while the resistance between the emitter and collector may vary depending on the type of transistor.
Steps:
Firstly, adjust the multimeter to the resistance range and select the appropriate range.
Then, measure the resistance values between the base emitter, base collector, and emitter collector of the transistor in sequence.
Record the measurement results and compare them with the data manual or standard values of the transistor to determine whether there are defects such as open circuit, short circuit, or leakage in the transistor.
Scope of application
The static resistance testing method is suitable for preliminary screening and troubleshooting of basic faults in transistors, such as pin open circuits, short circuits, etc. However, as this method cannot reflect the performance of transistors in their working state, it can only be used as a preliminary testing method.
2, Dynamic working point testing method
The dynamic operating point testing method determines the position and stability of a transistor's operating point by measuring its voltage and current values under specific operating conditions when the circuit is powered on. This method can more comprehensively reflect the actual working state and performance of transistors.
Principles and steps
Principle: In a common emitter amplifier circuit, the operating point of a transistor is mainly determined by its base current IB and collector voltage UCE. By adjusting circuit parameters such as base bias resistance, the operating point of the transistor can be changed and its impact on circuit performance can be observed.
Steps:
Construct a common emitter amplifier circuit containing the transistor under test.
Use a multimeter or oscilloscope to measure the voltage and current values of a circuit under specific operating conditions, including power supply voltage, collector voltage UCE, base voltage UB, and collector current IC.
Calculate the current amplification factor HFE of the transistor based on the measurement results and observe its variation with the operating point.
Adjust the circuit parameters and repeat the above measurement process to verify the stability and consistency of the transistor.
Scope of application
The dynamic operating point testing method is suitable for situations where precise understanding of the working state and performance of transistors in circuits is required. Through this method, the amplification capability, stability, and compatibility with other components of the transistor can be evaluated.
3, Frequency characteristic testing method
The frequency characteristic testing method is a method used to evaluate the response characteristics and performance of transistors at different frequencies. With the development of electronic technology, the application of high-frequency and high-speed circuits is becoming increasingly widespread, making the frequency characteristics of transistors one of the important performance indicators.
Principles and steps
Principle: The frequency characteristics of transistors mainly include parameters such as gain bandwidth product (GBW) and cutoff frequency (fT). These parameters determine the amplification capability and phase response of the transistor at different frequencies.
Steps:
Construct a test circuit containing the transistor under test, which should have an adjustable frequency signal source and measurement system.
Gradually change the frequency of the signal source and measure the gain, phase, and input-output waveform parameters of the transistor at different frequencies.
Draw the frequency characteristic curve of the transistor based on the measurement results, and analyze its key indicators such as gain bandwidth product and cutoff frequency.
Scope of application
The frequency characteristic testing method is suitable for evaluating the performance of transistors in high-frequency and high-speed circuits. Through this method, the response characteristics of transistors at different frequencies can be understood, providing important basis for circuit design and optimization.
